 "An excellent camera" 2009-12-10
By V. Blazina (Kensington, MD)
This is an excellent all-around camera that will not break the bank. I considered the EOS, D models, etc., but in the past I tired of lugging and changing all the extra lenses. Canon has fixed the main complaints that I had with the 5IS (which stopped working after about 5 years and probably 7-10,000 pictures): the cap now stays on and the megapixils have increased enough to allow photo shopping the pictures taken in low light conditions without excessive graininess.

 "Canon Powershot camera" 2009-12-09
By C. King
I have only had this camera for a month, so I am not totally use to using it yet. I like the camera and with basic pictures I am doing OK. The book that comes with the camera gives only basics and when I try to view the "book on CD" on my computer I have difficulty because you cannot just turn pages. You have to know what you are looking for and type in specifics in order to get an answer. You do not always know what to type in. The camera really needs a book WITH the product or the option to get one from Canon at no additional cost.

The camera has a video button that allows you to video no matter what mode you have the camera set at. You can also zoom while in video mode, which I was not able to do with my previous camera. Nice feature.

Great camera once you learn and remember all of the features. Good zoom, quality pics. My lens cap falls off all the time, even after it is secured. Seems like a small matter, but its a real distraction at sporting events or other crowds.

 "A wonderful buy" 2009-12-03
By K. Orr (Iowa)
So far so good and I've had it for a month. I am very pleased with this camera. Great zoom and sharp-crisp pictures. To think of the 20x zoom but still so compact is amazing- it is much larger than my old camera- a cybershot I replaced, but it's still easy to transport and lightweight. Only things I would change: the door that closes the compartment that holds the memory stick I can tell could easily break off. This is something you want to take care in. Also I didn't know it until after I had shot the video of my son's elementary play, but while using the video, if you take a picture- the video shows this; ie: the video will pause and it shows a shutter capturing the image prior to going back to video- also on the video it picked up now sound at all- so FYI- don't plan to use this as a video camera- which I didn't I just was wanting to see the quality- which is good though.

Big positives- battery life. I was very leary about buying a camera that uses regular batteries. In the past cameras, especially digital ones, would eat those things up. I've always had to use lithiums with my sony cameras. But this camera has great battery life. I have yet to see the battery status even go down at all yet- a month later, using the lcd screen the entire time, and using it a lot. Oh and this is with generic batteries that came with the camera, I imagine a good Energizer or Duracell will be even better. I do have rechargable Ni type batteries that will work with the camera too, but not sure I'll even need them! And the features- there are so many and so many settings, that for right now I just use the auto-setting. I have been playing around trying to master the rest.

A few quick points of interest: the flash is only auto if you have it flipped up. It does not flip up itself, but the screen will show "flip up flash" if needed. I like this though as you can choose to have artificial lighting or not- I prefer pictures without a flash if it can be done. I've seen where people said you had to use the Canon software to download pictures correctly and it does say that in the manual- untrue for me so far. It downloads the pictures even vertical ones correctly but simply downloading via usb, or card reader and just using the general built in picture finder software we all have on our microsoft formatted computers. I find this to be easier anyway so they save directly to the folder I want and I don't have to toy with their software (I'm sure it's a ploy to buy services and merchandise through them.

Overall very good camera and very happy!!!!

 "Good features. Great camera." 2009-12-03
By C. Festavan (Birmingham, AL)
This camera has all the features an amatuer could need or want. Sometimes it can be difficult to find the right setting or effect because of all the different options. It takes great photos when I take pictures. My wife has difficulties sometimes; I can't figure out why. It's not huge, but is obviously more cumbersome than pocket cameras. I have not had to replace the batteries yet (8 weeks).

In summary: Great pictures, Good value.

 "Canon Camera" 2009-12-09
By Scrapbook Mom (USA)
I just received the camera and have been playing with it on some photos. I am not a professional photographer so it is taking me a while to handle the camera. I like the way my photos have been coming out and used one photo for a Christmas Card. The reason I gave the display only 3 stars was simply that I don't see the image before I shoot it and can't get everyone into the photo on the picture. I am sure if I read through the book there is a solution to this, but I just haven't done so yet.

I love this camera and can't wait to see all that it is capable of in the future.

I almost bought a similar camera, but less megapizels, at a local store, but saw this one on Amazon at the last minute and ordered it instead. I'm sure I got the better deal by far. We're still learning all the features of the camera, but it is lightweight and does almost everything!

 "Great Intro SLR" 2009-12-02
By Winter Lover (St. Cloud MN)
I switched from a point-and-shoot to this SLR about a year and a half ago and I couldn't be happier. I've gotten way into photography after buying this camera. I'll typically keep it at home if going somewhere where it will easily get spilled on or dropped (ie. bars, etc.), but for more events and photo ops it's wonderful. It does take a little getting used to it's size if you're moving from a point-and-shoot to an SLR for the first time, but it is well worth the switch! When I purchased the XSi, I was deciding between this one and a Nikon equivilant. After playing with both of them, I ended up going with the Canon - the buttons are placed better and the features you get for the value were better in my opinion. Can't go wrong!

 "did not buy" 2009-11-29
By Rachel I. Cooper (Indiana)
I checked this camera out in the store first and found that the image was really bad when i tried to focus. I too had problems with auto focus and the picture quality in the view finder was bad and it was noisy when i tried to focus up close and it jumped around when i aimed it across the aisle. I did not like what I saw in the store and now that I read these reviews i know that it wan't just because it was a display camera. My picture quality is much nicer on my old camera which I shall keep since I have not had any problems with it which is a kodak. I am by no means an expert photographer, but I am not a amateur either somewhere intermediate i would like to think. So maybe someday I will upgrade my camera till then I will not be buying this camera.

 "Bad Image Quality" 2009-11-22
By Ottis123 (California)
For a long time I refrained from writing this review, believing that probably I was to blame for the subpar image quality (out of focus) pictures I was getting. But my conclusion is that it was not me. It was the camera.

I had such a great experience with the Canon S2IS that I was ready to move up to my first DSLR camera, and what better than the same brand. I enthusiastically ordered the Xsi with the supplied kit lens. I soon realized that no matter which focus setting I used, many pictures, both indoor and outdoor, were slightly out of focus, and slightly underexposed. I took side-by-side pictures together with my S2IS, and was shocked to see that the older, 5 MP camera took pictures much, much better than the Xsi.

I wrote to Canon customer service, and they blamed it on the "kit" lens. They suggested I buy a lens with a wider aperture (which was about $1,000, so I thought, "You're kidding"). I did not buy the lens, but I did buy an external flash ($350), and the image quality was just the same. I was so disgusted with the situation that I basically stopped using the camera, and continued using the old one instead.

After some time, I really gave up on the camera and decided to return it, together with the flash. Fortunately, Amazon has fantastic customer sevice, and everything worked out without a problem.

In conclusion, my camera definitely had focus problems. These focus problems caused the pictures to be improperly exposed, and the flash strength to be slightly inexact, all contributing to bad image quality. For me, my Xsi's 12 MP sensor and all its other features were worthless if the image quality was lower than that of my 5 MP camera. I am now hesitant to buy another Canon camera, afraid of a repeat of this.

One star for the camera, and five stars for Amazon's customer service.

"Inexpensive, but photo quality sometimes suffers" 2009-12-06
By Stephen P. Heleker (Boise, ID USA)
This is just a basic UV filter, and is usually pretty useful, but occasionally creates serious problems. I've noticed that I get blue/green noise on my images in back-lit or bright photographs. This is a serious problem, and isn't always noticeable in the viewfinder. It's no fun to get home and find out that some of your favorite compositions look like crap.

I'm using Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) with a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, which both function beautifully, so the filter is definitely the problem.

If you can't afford a better filter, go with this one. Be ready to take it off when you are outside though.

"No good with bright point light sources" 2009-12-02
By Kris (Australia)
I bought this filter for protection of my lens, but it's only really useful in even light. When there are bright single point light sources, such as hanging lights indoors, candles, spotlights in a dark room etc, green spots or flares are cast across the picture; usually in very unfortunate ways like on a subject's face. I do a lot of hand-held low-light photography where there is likely to be point light sources, this filter is more of a hinderance in those circumstances.

This telephoto zoom lens is designed with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology while retaining compactness and lightness, in response to demands of photographers. This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses), and the image stabilizer effect equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer. In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon's 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. It also uses a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration for excellent image quality throughout the zoom range. This new EF-S telephoto lens with great features delivers excellent performance at an affordable price for all photographers.

"Great product for the perfect price!" 2009-12-05
By K Elaine
I was looking for a perfect zoom lens for my Canon Rebel T1i (500d) that would not break the bank. After readings tons of reviews and comparing/contrasting lenses, I finally decided to get this one! When I tried it out the first time, I was pleased- more pleased than I expected. Even on a cloudy day, the quality was still there! These are a few positives and negatives about this lens:

Positives:

*Good quality, especially on a sunny day!

*Great zoom!

*Quick to put on camera body and start taking photos

*Easy to zoom (almost too easy!)

*Has manual/auto focus

*Not too big or too small

*Has image stabilization

Negatives:

*some grain during cloudy days when you have to bump up the ISO

*Some vignetting on full zoom

*not a fast lens (which means that the F-Stop number is not low enough, which does not allow lots of light in)

*NOT useful (quality-wise) indoors or night time photos

*Sometimes I have to switch between my kit lens and this lens because it starts at 50mm (and I need a wider lens)

*use of plastic to make this lens

It many seem like there are more negatives, but those are just the broad positives. For the money, this lens is perfect. I am very satisfied with it, and glad I bought this one. Like many people, I need a zoom lens to get the job done, not to be PERFECT in every way. What lens is?

If you need a zoom lens, buy this one!

 "Heads up Mac users" 2009-12-06
By Mr. Bill (Los Altos, CA USA)
Just a little FYI for Mac users of the T1i bundled software (I presume the 90%+ buyers who are Windows people do not have this problem). Several elements of the T1i software suite do not work under Mac OS X 10.6 (a.k.a. "Snow Leopard"). Most notably, plugging the camera into a USB port fires off the Canon EOS Utility, which then promptly crashes. I have been emailing with Canon product support for 3 months now (?!). There is a work around (which involves not using the EOS Utility, how's that for a fix?), but, personally, if I had known about this, I wouldn't have gotten the camera.

While Canon acknowledges the problem, their weasel-wording on their replies leads me to suspect that they don't intend to fix this.

Mac users already know that Snow Leopard, while nominally an "upgrade" is in reality a collection of bug fixes for which Apple charges $30. Unlike going from XP to Vista or Vista to W7, I presume that the vast majority of OS X 10.5 users out there have "upgraded" to 10.6. If this describes you, then you should know that although you can still download and edit your picture files, you do it in a hokey way that involves crashes and not getting to all the features.

Why 4 stars? This has nothing to do with how the camera works taking pictures. For that, I'll leave you to the other reviews.

I have used the camera for a couple of weeks now and it more than meets my expectations. My old camera is Canon XT and it good but this one is great.  "Disappointing image quality" 2009-12-04
By Harrison Judd (Connecticut)
This camera simply does not measure up to the posted reviews. I have been shooting with this camera for several months now with many lenses from the included kit lens to L series lenses and I do not recommend it. It does not match my 20D in terms of grain structure or image quality.

Better than a point and shoot by far, but it is most definitely NOT at the level Canon has set with cameras like the 20D and original 5D, both of which I am still using and have compared this camera to extensively. It is surprisingly small and lightweight, a big reason I purchased it because I do a fair amount of travel photography, but I now find I would rather carry the extra weight of a camera body I get superior results from.

All my tests were done shooting in camera RAW - so if you are planning on using this camera for shooting on automatic or JPEG, you may have different results.

While I did not do extensive testing of the video function, I will say the video quality is excellent - and I will keep the camera for that feature alone until I upgrade to a 5D MK2.
